The importance of good portrait photography for Corporate and Business

Portrait photography  is a crucial element of any business, not just about taking a picture. It is about capturing the personality of the person in front of the camera. The photographer needs to be able to understand what makes that person tick, what their quirks are, and how they want to be seen.

We all have an idea of what we want our portrait to look like- whether it’s for a family reunion or for your company’s website- but it can be difficult to find a professional that understands your vision and can deliver on it. This is where we come in.

When Skillfield, a Melbourne based Big data and cyber security firm approached us they wanted images that helped promote their business and staff as they understood that in this day and age, the portraits of a company’s employees are often the first impression that is given to the customer. 

With only a short time allocated for photography, Ivan and Lighting Assistant/ Digital Operator Jonathan arrived before the staff started work to set up lighting and be ready to start. We created a set up for a grey background, white background and group portrait in the foyer. A variety of images gave them options for social media, website and promotional material.

BANKVIC Annual Report Corporate Portrait Photography

BankVIC began back in 1974 as a Police Credit Co-Operative and now services the emergency sector and health as well as police. For their 2022 annual report a more relaxed approach was desired instead of the standard on white background head shots that was previously used.

On the day of photography, we were given a short amount of time in between meetings to have everyone photographed for an individual portraits and then the group portrait. Set up and being prepared before everyone turned up was required. Set up one was with two lights and modifiers against a white paper roll. The second set up was in the library room which was only approx. 2.5 metres wide.

We had pre planned the layout before the shoot to make sure we knew everyone had enough room in the final crop. With the room being too small to fit everyone we decided to shoot it in sections to merge in digitally afterwards.

Polperro Wines & Even Keel | Studio Wine Bottle Photography

Polperro Wines is a biodynamic & organically certified single vineyard winery from Mornington Peninsula,.
We were super excited to be contacted by Polperro early this year to photograph their new range of Polperro and Even Keel wines.

They wanted new images that showed off the textured foil embossing of their new Even Keel labels. Photographing bottles with the Hasselblad 50 megapixel digital medium format camera For a high dynamic range and tonality in the new labels was the perfect choice.

3 Willows Vineyard Tasmania Wine Bottle Product Photography

3 Willows Vineyard is a family run winery based in Red Hills Tasmania, located 35mins from Launceston., They specialise in growing cool climate Chardonnay, Pinot Noir & French/American Baco Noir.

We were contacted by the new owners of the winery to photograph their bottles for social media and website.

Capturing texture copper foil and fine detail in the label was an important factor in the photography. A high resolution Hasselblad 50 mega pixel digital medium format camera was used to capture all the tones and detail.

During mid 2021 amidst the Covid Lockdowns, we worked on producing their latest brochure. They required a series of images showcasing their range of door handles, cabinet and bathroom accessories.

Challenges of Working During Pandemic Lockdowns

Once concepts were decided on, we set out sourcing props and building sets which took longer than usual due to delivery delays. Production of the hardware delays also meant there was a 3 week pause in between photography. 

This time around we wanted to create images that were more conceptual and colourful. We had the opportunity to work with contrasting colours and a wide range of shades.

About the Client

Designer Doorware designs and manufactures superior quality door furniture and architectural hardware from their Melbourne based warehouse. This is our third year working with them in producing images for their catalogue.

Capturing the Mood with Infused Whiskey Decanters Product Photography

Infused had commissioned IJ Productions to create a series of images for their range of whiskey decanters and reusable metal and stone cubes.

Working on the concept involved planning what was possible to shoot in a day and props required. Once a shot list was fleshed out the client went about sourcing the appropriate props and we gathered all the items required to build sets. In the past we have found working this way produced consistent results. View previous photo shoots examples.

Making Products look good on a plain white background.

There is only so much you can do creatively on a plain white background but to shoot it well can actually be a lot more complicated lighting wise compared to photographing something in-situation or on a dark background. Deep etching or contouring of the object is unrealistic and flattens the object in the frame. IJ Productions Principle Photographer Ivan Lee prefers photographing products on a reflective surface to create a mirror effect that adds depth and dimension to the product (but we can deep etch if required).

Lifestyle Product Photography Images That Stand Out

Being in the middle of stage 3 lockdown we kept to a minimal crew with the client and Photographer only. The minimal props involved meant a prop stylist wasn’t required. 

A few stained pine boards and plenty of whiskey (some for drinking) was pretty much all we needed as the whiskey sets provided enough items for propping.

With a shot list finalised before the photo shoot we worked efficiently on creating the final lifestyle images as we knew what props were required for each image and what order to photograph in for minimal down time.

Another use for the images was for Amazon listings which meant composition also had to work within a square format.  

To capture images at the highest quality and dynamic range, A Hasselblad digital medium format camera and Canon Professional DSLR was used for the photo shoot. Images lit with Profoto Flash lighting equipment.

Pondalowie Vineyard Wine Photography

Pondalowie Vineyards Wine Bottle Product Photography

Pondalowie contacted IJ Productions because they required professional wine bottle product photography for their latest range of wines. Images are to be used online on their website and social media which was why Ivan had to create a  well executed and  sharp with dramatic lighting for the bottles.  Using one of the finest camera systems, the Hasselblad digital medium format camera that captures images at an incredible 50 megapixels at two times the sensor size of the standard digital SLR and professional strobe lighting system by Profoto.

The first release of Pondalowie was in 2002 and since then it has always met with critical acclaim including being awarded a five star rating by James Halliday consecutively every year from 2006 to 2016, Pondalowie wines are widely regarded as some of Australia’s finest red wines.

They established 25 acres of vineyard in the Bendigo region in Central Victoria and planted Shiraz, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Viognier. Their winemaking technique is with  minimal intervention learned during our more than 20 years making wine in France, Portugal and Australia.

Pandemic Lockdown Photography No.05

During lockdown Ivan photographed the Pondalowie Special Release at home. Creating a scene involved props from home and creative lighting to mimic window lights. Image was used for Pondalowie newsletter and socials.

The Special Release is a complex wine with hints of Tobacco, plums, oak and blackberries. Most excellent drop for watching the 11am press conference.

Ulupna Winery Bottle Product Photography

We were contacted by the design and marketing team at Ulupna winery to photograph their latest range of Italian wines and new labels of their Australian wines. An urgent 2 day turn around was required; Photo shoot organised on Tuesday, photographed on Wednesday and files delivered by Friday.

Needing images that show the detail in their labels that include gold foil and subtle tones they contacted IJ Productions because of our experience and technical expertise in wine bottle & Product Photography. Working with multiple lights and light modifiers we set up a complex lighting system that included a 2400W Profoto professional strobe light. Camera system chosen for this was the 50 megapixel Digital medium format camera from Hasselblad that captures an incredible 16bit colour dynamic range (DSLR are only 12-14bit).

We spent only a few hours photographing the wine bottles individually and as groupings with the client there to approve images.

Ulupna vineyard is located in Goulburn Valley Australia. The winery is a family business that started out as a small B&B in the 1980s as a retirement activity of Nick and Kathy. Since 2000 approximately 22 hectares of vines have been planted; 50% Shiraz, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Chardonnay.

In 2012 Ulupna started predominantly exporting all wines to China, Korea, Hong Kong and Singapore. Starting in 2016 they have concentrated their efforts on the local market.

Images are captured on the  Hasselblad X1D  50 megapixel digital mirrorless medium format camera.  The Hasselblad is a high resolution professional camera that captures far more detail and colour compared to 35mm digital cameras such as ones from Canon, Nikon or Sony due to the sensor being nearly twice the size of a 35mm frame.
