I’m Ivan Lee, a Melbourne-based commercial and product photographer with more than 25 years of professional experience.
I specialise in technical lighting and creating images that communicate clearly without needing words. I enjoy working out the best way to photograph a subject, building the lighting around it and solving whatever challenges come up on the day.
I’m also known for working quickly, thinking on my feet and keeping shoots straightforward and easy to manage.
Lighting is a big part of how I work
I enjoy the problem-solving side of photography, particularly working out how lighting can make an image communicate something without relying on words.
Sometimes that means carefully controlling reflections on a product. Other times it means creating the right atmosphere around a person, location or piece of machinery.
The lighting needs to suit the subject and the story the image needs to tell. That is what makes each shoot different, and it is one of the parts of commercial photography I enjoy most.
Straight forward, efficient and hands-on
Every shoot starts with understanding what the images need to achieve.
From there, I work out the most practical way to get there, whether that involves a controlled studio setup, working on location or adapting to whatever the shoot throws at us.
I work quickly and make decisions as I go. If something isn't working, I’m comfortable changing the lighting, approach or setup rather than wasting time trying to force it.
Commercial shoots don't always go exactly to plan. Being able to think quickly, solve problems and keep things moving is a big part of the job.
