Artwork Reproduction & High Resolution Film Scanning

Artwork Reproduction /copy Photography with High Resolution Hasselblad Camera & Film Scanning with the Imacon Flextight Precision II Scanner.

We have finally set-up the Flextight scanner in our West Melbourne studio. The Flextight scanner is considered one of the best scanners in the world.

  • 42bit colour (1 pass)
  • 4800DPI True Optical Resolution
  • 3.9 Density
  • Maximum scan size:  transparency 300x121mm / Reflective A4
  • No glass or Mirrors = Maximum sharpness and no Newton Rings
Drum scanners are becoming harder to find for scanning and reproductions because the need for one is not necessary with the rise of high quality digital cameras. The Flextight Precision scanner competes the the quality of a traditional drum scanning but at a fraction of the price. With the Flextight there is no need for tape on the film, apply gels and cleaning of the transparency after scans.
The Flextight offers higher resolution and greater density when compared to film scanners.
Artwork Reproduction /Copy
With artwork that is not possible to run through the scanner, we photograph the artwork with our High Resolution Hasselblad Medium Format Camera. The Hasselblad is a 5440×4080 pixel camera (22 mega pixels) with a sensor that’s twice the size of a 35mm DSLR camera. It provides  16bit colour and a 66 megabyte 8bit RGB file or 128bit in 16bit.
We choose Elinchrom digital RX power pack as our lighting equipment for consistency in colour temperature and high power output.
Files can be supplied as full resolution DNG (Digital Negative) file or RGB TIFF

Creative Baby Portrait Photography

This image was inspired by Jill Greenberg‘s crying baby series. Apart from removing my hand from the image no major digital  re-touching was required for the image. Lighting for the HDR (high dynamic range) photography look usually requires a big fill light. I use a large parabolic umbrella as the fill.

Screen capture from Phocus RAW conversion software.

To create this image 5 lights were used :

  • Hensel Compact 1200 w/2m Parabolic umbrella used as a massive diffused fill light.
  • Hensel 1200W w/ beauty dish as a top hair light.
  • 2x Elinchrom strobe heads w/ Photobasics strip softbox powered by Elinchrom Digital RX 2400 power pack.
  • Broncolor Mobil w/mobilite head and snoot & grid. Battery powered pack.

lighting for the photo

Camera & Settings: Hasselblad H2D 50-110mm,  f8@1/250th sec 100ISO

Our Photography Equipment: Hasselblad Professional Digital Medium Format Camera

Our reason for purchasing the Hasselblad H2D was for its stunning image quality when compared to the current DSLR on the market.

  • 16bit Image Capture. When compared to DSLRs that only capture images at 10-14bit the images from the digital medium format have a greater tonal range.
  • Larger Sensor. the 49mmx36mm sensor is twice the size of any full frame DSLR which is only 36mmx24mm.
  • Leaf Shutter lenses. the Hasselblad HC series lenses sync to flash at up to 1/800th of a sec compared to DSLRs that have a maximum sync speed of 1/200th

The Hasselblad HC 80mm /2.8 is considered one of the best portrait lenses on the market today and is the standard lens for the H system.

Hasselblad  HC 50-110mm /3.5-4.5  zoom lens has a range from wide-angle to short telephoto. This lens boasts exceptionally high image quality at all focal lengths, whether shooting film or digital, and is comparable with corresponding fixed focal length lenses.

We recently photographed the latest collection for Fabulous Nobodies in the studio. It was the first time I had photographed Kate from Vivian’s Model Management and she was fantastic in front of the camera.

The only hitch was the Elinchrom 202 floor pack blew up after photographing frame 1013 luckily the back up lighting gear (Broncolor) finished off the shoot.

Elinchrom Digital 2400RX & 202

Studio Family Portrait Photography

Family portrait photography in our melbourne studioFamily portrait photography in our melbourne studio

I photographed our family (the Ma and Lee family) in our West Melbourne photography studio. Images were captured on the high resolution medium format camera – The Hasselblad digital camera. I prefer using this camera for portraits because of its ability to capture detail better than any digital SLR used by most Professional Photographers today.
